Should you be Worried about your Breast Implants?

Breast Augmentation Salt Lake City, UTMany women seek breast augmentation as a way to improve the contours of their body. This procedure has been performed around the world for several decades, and it has been amended with advancements to improve the outcome. It is interesting that, in light of the commonality of breast augmentation with implants, there could still be misperceptions about the results of this treatment. If a misperception might stand in the way of any woman reaching her desired appearance, we have to speak up. So we will.

The Matter of Longevity

One of the concerns that women have about breast implants is that they will have to replace them every 10 years. There are a few reasons why this general idea has continued. We’ll touch on that in a minute. But first, let’s answer the question. Do breast implants have to be replaced every ten years?

It’s possible. It’s also possible that they won’t. It’s not as simple as “yes” or “no.” Here’s why.

One of the reasons that women may believe that their implants will need replacement after 10 years is because that is the manufacturer warranty on certain types of implants. Saline implants may leak during or after that time. If they do, replacement is necessary.

But what about silicone implants? This is where there may be a big misconception in longevity.

Several years ago, the FDA released a study that included the statistic that 1 in 5 women needed silicone breast implant replacement approximately 10 years after her initial surgery. Because 1 in 5 women needed this, due to capsular contracture or some other problem, there began a widespread idea that all silicone breast implants would need to be replaced after 10 years. Not so.

Two Key Points

For data to achieve the purpose, it must be interpreted correctly. Here’s what you need to know about the potential need for breast implant replacement.

  1. The FDA studied 100 cases of silicone breast implants. 1 in 5 equates to 20 women in a single study. That means 80 other women had no issues and did not undergo revision surgery.
  2. The FDA study was released in 2011, which means the very structure of silicone implants was far different than the models that are used today.
