If the signs of aging have become too much for you to ignore, you have reached the point of wanting change. Just how much change you want may still be in question. We understand that, just because dermal fillers and other injectables have been used for facial rejuvenation for several years, doesn’t mean that information regarding how to address age-related cosmetic concerns is easy to discern.
We want patients of our Salt Lake City and Bountiful offices to know they are not on their own to make sense of their treatment options. We take the time to provide details and answer questions so you can decide for yourself, in full confidence, how to proceed.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are products that have been formulated to fill lines and creases, as well as other areas of depression on the face and hands. The fillers that are commonly used today contain biodegradable gel substances such as hyaluronic acid (Juvederm products) or poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra). Developed for use in soft tissues, fillers differ from Botox in their action. Botox and other neuromodulators reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by facial movements. Dermal fillers smooth the skin by introducing a substance into the superficial tissue to add volume.
A Closer Look at Fillers
Dermal fillers are intended for the rejuvenation of facial and hand atrophy caused by collagen depletion and the marked decrease in fat pads that occurs as we age. Without the adequate structure in the layers beneath the skin’s surface, we develop concerns such as:
- Under eye puffiness or dark circles.
- Lines between the nose and mouth. These are commonly known as “laugh lines” or nasolabial folds.
- Lines between the mouth and chin referred to as marionette lines.
- Smokers lines and loss of volume around the lips.
- Laxity along the jaw line.
- Aging hands.
- Hollowness at the temples.
- Flat or sunken cheeks.
